Aine

First-Generation Scholar to Civil Engineer

Course: BEng in Civil Engineering

Fund Supported: First-Generation Scholars Fund

Aine grew up in a small rural town in Clare where university felt like an impossible dream. Her parents never had the chance to pursue higher education, and with three younger siblings at home, money was tight. Through the First-Generation Scholars Fund, Aine received a bursary that covered her travel and textbooks.

“I remember the moment I got the email—I just cried,” she recalls. “It wasn’t just about the money. It meant someone believed in me.”

With her living costs partially covered, Aine could focus on her studies. She graduated top of her class and was offered a graduate role with a major infrastructure firm in Galway. Today, she returns to TUS as a mentor for students in similar situations.
